Yasaka Saigon Hotel, Nha Trang
This 4 star rated hotel has an impressive website (www.yasanhatrang.com) and with Superior rooms being offered at US$49 (rack rate US$98) and Deluxe rooms at US$60 (rack rate US$118 from their website), this seemed a good choice. We booked for 5 nights in a Deluxe room as we were informed that the Superior rooms were fully booked.
Our initial impressions from their website were dashed on arrival at the hotel. With numerous staff hanging around in the lobby, all seemingly pre-occupied, we had to carry our own luggage to the check-in desk (even the airport taxi driver was stunned by this turn of events). As we proceeded to check in, our bags were whisked away, where to I am sure, and it took about 40 minutes for them to arrive in our room after 3 requests to the reception desk.
When we finally unpacked it was obvious our clothes need ironing, and as the room was not supplied with an electric iron we requested one from housekeeping. We were informed that it was “against hotel rules” to do any ironing in the room, and that a hotel ironing room was not available. However, we could request the hotel pressing service. A quick check of these rates indicated that it would be far cheaper to purchase an electric iron and do it ourselves, which we did. Cost was not really an issue here, but the fact that these basic facilities are now so commonplace in 4 star hotels in Asia these days.
Things went downhill from this point. The swimming pool was dirty, with cloudy water and algae slime. Even though booked for 5 nights, our magnetic key card was only programmed for one night at a time, which meant that we were continually being locked out of room. After a VERY firm but polite request, the key card was reluctantly programmed correctly to cover the remaining few days of our stay.
The lobby bar was staffed from 7 AM to 10 PM, however after many hours spent in the lobby bar grappling with the hotel’s very slow WiFi, these staff never offered any service for drinks etc. After one rather long dry session in the bar without a drink and with the staff gazing indifferently across the lobby, I complained to the front desk. It must have had some effect as I was offered a drink on about day 3 of our stay, however It was a challenge for the bar staff to find their invoice book (obviously very seldom used), and on check-out for this one purchase at the lobby bar I was double-charged!!!
As someone who can spend up to 300 nights a year living in hotels in Viet Nam and other Asian cities, I would rate this particular hotel as far below what one could expect at most 4 star hotels in Viet Nam. If you are not fussed by poor service and the price is right, then by all means stay at this hotel. However, if you expect a reasonable level of service I would recommend you look elsewhere. With 5 years experience in Viet Nam staying at accommodation ranging from Government guesthouses to the best 5 star hotels, I would suggest that our US$60 per night could find far better value and higher levels of service. The rack rates on their website are a joke. |
